Summary:
13 year old Hélène St. Onge faces an unknown future. After the death of their parents, Hélène’s sister, Catherine, must journey to New France to be a Filles du Roi, a girl sent to the colony to marry and help populate the new world, and Hélène is to accompany her as her maid. Hélène must survive the perilous journey and travel through the wilderness to discover what her future holds.
Response and Reaction:
This was an excellent historical fiction. Told in the form of a diary, it is easy for the reader to relate to Hélène and her journey. Hélène faces many perils including death, illness, war, and many others, but the story remains positive.
